When Hermes the Great made his mark in ancient Greece, he was known as a messenger of the Gods and the guider of souls to the underworld. Hermes was full of insight and knowledge, as well as a multitasker in the spiritual world. Ancient Greece saw the Egyptian God, Thoth and realized he was just like Hermes the Great. Over time the Greeks and the Egyptians merged mythologies blending Hermes and Thoth and thereby renaming Hermes the Great with Hermes Trismegistus. Trismegistus means “the thrice-greatest”. The Egyptians named him Hermes-”The God of Wisdom”. He was later named “The Master of Masters” by the Egyptians. Hermetic alchemy, rooted in the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, focuses on spiritual transformation and the pursuit of wisdom. This mystical tradition quickly spread across various cultures, influencing their own spiritual practices and philosophies. He was such an amazing spiritual being and earned each name he was given. This is where Hermetic Alchemy really took root and began to spread. It spread from Greece and Egypt to China, India, Persia, Islam, and eventually reached Europe and other parts of the world. But what is Hermetic Alchemy and why did it spread so quickly across other countries and take root in their mythology?
Here is where the Hermetic Alchemy begins. The term ‘Hermetic’ comes from Hermes Trismegistus, and it signifies something secret, sealed off, or private. The knowledge and wisdom associated with Hermetic alchemy were so secret that they were never written or documented. Only by word of mouth did the Hermetic teachings travel from person to person, country to country. These teachings were like following a treasure map to hidden layers of wisdom, essentially a universal scavenger hunt for deeper meaning. These teachings shrouded in secrecy were passed down through generations, inviting seekers to embark on a transformative journey of discovery and wisdom.
